COLD SORES can be small or massive, they can be on your mouth or under your nose -- wherever they are and no matter how big or small they are painful and ugly.

I had cold sores off and on for years. Every time I got a cold with a runny nose I got cold sores or certain kinds of stress would bring one on. Abreva came out some years ago and it worked very well. The only problem with Abreva is the price -- about $18.00 for a tiny, tiny tube. I was at work and my runny nose gave me an awful cold sore under my nose. It was ugly and sore. When I got home I discovered my Abreva was all gone. I remembered that garlic was supposed to be good as an antiseptic. So in desperation I gave it a try. The results were amazing.

The Garlic stopped the cold sore immediately -- the nasty tingling feeling was gone. I know this may seem too simple and it is hard to believe it works. After all if it were so simple why is it not common knowledge -- I don't know? Maybe because it stings. But I would rather suffer the burning sensation and be rid of them almost forever.

THE PROCEDURE IS AS FOLLOWS:

  • Use a large glove of Garlic, any kind will do.
  • Crush it with the base of a knife or put it in a garlic press. This will release the juices.
  • Then press the garlic gently on the cold sore or sores, the more juice the better. If the cold sore is large keep using new pieces of garlic. THIS WILL STING LIKE CRAZY, but you will notice an immediate relief. In my case and I hope in your case if you try this you will find that the garlic kills the cold sore immediately. The nasty tingle stops and you can tell it is dead. Do this as long as you can stand it.
  • Rinse and pat dry. This is important. Use a paper towel or toilet paper because it is steril.
  • If you have honey dab it on the cold sore -- honey is an astringent and has vitamins and minerals that will help this wound heal. After a few minutes rinse and pat dry again. You want to keep it clean.
  • Repeat twice a day until cold sore is gone. For a small cold sore once is enough. For a large cold sore it will take two or three days, even when the cold sore is dead the damage is deep and takes time to heal.
  • An unexpected result of this treatment is that I did not have another cold sore for four years. And since the last one it has been a year. The garlic seemed to get rid of this virus for a much longer time. With Abreva I still got the cold sores on a regular basis but with the garlic I have had only one attack in five years. I saw on a commercial about Abreva that it blocks the virus -- it does not kill it. Garlic kills it. I know it is simple but it works.
  • If you try this I wish for you the same success that I experienced. Perhaps this treatment will not work for everyone but it is worth a try.

Did you try this treatment and did it work for you

I seldom get cold sores but as you know I was in the hospital and their tissues were like sandpaper against my nose from the blowing. It looked like I had two permanent boogers under my nose from the scabs. LOL. I wish the hospital would have given me garlic instead of blistex. Fortunately this picture is small but it was taken the day after I got home, still very ill, and I had to go to my grandsons b-day party looking scabby. This page is bookmarked. Thanks. Give us more home remedies.

Thank you so much lisapreston for your comments. The garlic would have stopped all your misery and embarassment.

JayMex 21 months ago

Can I still do it if I'm in the scab phase? Or would I be better off just using honey?

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 21 months ago

Honey will certainly help it heal faster. The garlic would help kill any lingering virus. I would use the garlic because it will kill the virus and speed the healing. It will help keep it from coming back. If it does come back use it immediately and this will kill it right away and perhaps you won't have a break out for years to come.

holy sweet baby Jesus! Thank you so much for the garlic honey combo! i was going to lose my job because everybody was thought anything i touched transmitted the infection to them! however i know this isn't true, but no one else believed me! If it wasn't for this info i would be unemployed, a million thanks!!!!

You are so welcome Johnathan K! I am so glad it worked for you. I had the biggest, ugliest cold sore under my nose when in desperation I tried this -- the amazing thing is how fast it heals and how it stops it dead in its tracks. At work like you I didn't want to meet with anyone in the public because the sore is all they see and it is scary. Glad it helped you and that you are still employed!

Sall 15 months ago

I remember a few years ago, my father who was very prone to cold sores (as am I) figured since garlic was good for you in every other way, that it would work for a cold sore. He cut a clove of garlic and rubbed it on the cold sore on his lip. The next 2 days it spread all over. Up to his nose, down his chin. It was awful. Hopefully it doesnt happen to you.

charlieGirl 14 months ago

Remember cold sores can spread, that's why it's important to, as daughterson stated, "gently press in on the cold sore." Do not rub on lips, this may cause a spread. When rubbing you're moving the virus across space. Pressings allow you to stay in the area only.

You are so right charlieGirl. I think the honey also helps and rinsing well.

Well im using the garlic now. And I used it twice in one day hopefully it works for me

hi, i have two cold sores one on each corner of my mouth. ive had one for almsota month now and the second just showed up 2 days ago... i tried the garlic and honey as instructed and now the cold sores feel a bit swollen and numb ... the skin around them has gone all white and dead looking and i cant tell if they are getting better or not !! what do you think?

ps ive booked an appointment with my doctor already

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 3 months ago

I am not a doctor but perhaps you do not have cold sores. I am glad you have an appointment with a doctor. One thing I do know is that cold sores do a lot of damage and take time to heal. It could be that the skin destroyed by the cold sore turned white because the cold sore had already killed the cells. If you had the tell-tell tingling and the tingling stopped then the cold sore is dead. It takes time for the damage to heal. I do hope you had suffered no problems do to this treatment. Please let me know the results of your doctors

appointment. I don't think the garlic would cause you any damage. Cold sores are destructive -- the numbness could be because the cold sore damaged your cells and soon they will heal -- with in a few days. Good luck.

Ginger 3 months ago

Thank you so much for this! I have a possible cold sore -unlike some people, I don't get any tingling until after a cold sore has reared it's ugly head, so it could just as easily be a very angry canker sore on the inside rim of my lip- and this has been very helpful! I tried it yesterday evening and this morning, and already there seems to be some improvement!

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 3 months ago

Thank you so much Ginger for your feedback. I discovered that garlic does not work until the cold sore errupts -- bummer. I am so happy it is working for you.

gina 3 months ago

i just tried it too and it seems calmer but is still bumpy/ is this what you mean by it still has to heal? The bumpy blisters still to go down ?

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 3 months ago

Yes Gina, the damage has been done and even though the virus has been kille it takes time to heal.

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 3 months ago

Yes Gina the damage has been done. The healing of the damage will take time. The garlic at least stops the damage.

Roocke 3 months ago

Hey :) how long does this process take for the cold sore to completely heal again and go back to normal? Using the garlic? :)

carol 3 months ago

How long do you leave the garlic pressed against teh cold sore, and will it work if there are blisters?

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 3 months ago

It depends on how big the sore is. The more damage the longer it takes. You should see a big improvement in three days or more if it is a big sore. A little sore should clear up with in a day or two.

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 3 months ago

Did it work for you?

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 3 months ago

It doesn't take long -- ten or twnety seconds.

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 3 months ago

The garlic stops the damage from continuing but the damage that is already done will take time to heal. The honey will help it heal faster. The garlic stops the cold sore in its tracks but it does not undo the damage already done. Use honey to speed the healing. Dab honey on the wound wait four or five minutes and rinse.

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 3 months ago

It only needs to stay on the sore ten or twenty seconds at a time. Keep doing it until the tingling stops. Maybe two or three times.

1344 2 months ago

My cold sore just began forming and it stinged when i put the garlic on and now just a little sting but not really do i take off the garlic now?

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 2 months ago

Yes take the garlic off you only need keep dab it on and leave for seconds (like 20 or 30 seconds) not minutes or hours. Rinse well. You can repeat this with a fresh piece of garlic. When the tingle stops the cold sore is dead and the healing begins. If it is a big cold sore repeat this process until you can tell there is no active virus left. Always rinse well.

Sweetmeat 2 months ago

Have tried everything for years. Gave it a shot for the first time last note as soon as I noticed a cold sore had arrived. Left it on for a few minutes. Felt it burning rite away, but not as bad as nail polish remover! Seemed as though ot helped so i applied again this morning and again this afternoon. Looked like a zit not and I am hoping it will be gone soon and forever!

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 2 months ago

I hope so too Sweetmeat. Unfortunatly it takes time to heal. Thank you for letting me know how it worked for you and I hope you don't have another one for years to come.

Ok. Got a little one under the one that vanished so my guess is that you need to apply garlic several times a day for a minute everyday until that thing is gone.out of garlic so off to the market and hopefully I will have the same success.

Im always suffering from cold sores i tried many things to get rid of it but finally i read about garlic and i tried it , it works , but honestly im still suffering cause i experience it on every fwe weeks and even when i use garlic it cure it but after few weeks i get it on other side of my lips ... If there is any affective solution for it ??? Or i just keep trying garlic when ever i feel it ??

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 2 months ago

Maybe it will take you a little longer to get rid of the virus since you have had them so long and so ofter. Also it seems from what you said you have sores in different places. Keep up the garlic treatment and perhaps all the virus pockets will dissapear. In any case it will keep the cold sores from getting out of control. I hope you will soon see an end to these nasty little sores.

I never got a cold sore and last night i could feel something there but i didnt know what it was so i ignored it. When i woke up my middle upper lip was/still is VERY swollen with little blisters on them. I immediately went on the internet to research what it was and how to get rid of it. I am going to try the garlic but i wanted to know how i know when the sore is killed? The garlic is burning so bad every time i put it on and i feel a tingle after i rinse it off. How do i know if it is working or not?

Sara 8 weeks ago

Keeo trying garlic its a natural antibiotique it Will work believe me just put garlic on it and wait for 20 mnts and u Will see . It Will kill the virus . And dont Forget to wash ur hands when ever u touch it

I have a sore that started last night and came quick. Will elephant garlic work just as well? Or should I get regular garlic?

On my third one now. First one went away immediately. Then another that swelled up huge. Just keep coming....Third one now.

daughterson Hub Author 7 weeks ago

I am no doctor but you must have several sites. I have one site that errupts but not in years but you must have more. Keep up the treatment and maybe you can kill all the sites. Please keep me informed -- I am hoping that in the end you will be free.

Sweetmeat 7 weeks ago

I think my third was actually an allergic reaction to turmeric. My entire upper lip was enormous! But no "blisters". The swelling was intense and fast like an allergic reaction. It has now been roughly 24 hrs since the swelling got out of control. Nothing would help it. Now the swelling seems to be going away on its own. The histamines released in my lips must be subsiding as they typically do within 24 hrs.

angela56 7 weeks ago

A few weeks ago i got a cold sore on my lip. After it went away sure enough another one came back the next morning but in a different spot then after that one went away I got ANOTHER one in a different spot. I dont know what to do and this is really hurting my self esteem. Can you please help me?

Mohammad 7 weeks ago

Ive dont a pretty good job at making my cold sores appear once a year, but I still hate dealing with them. Its been a year and a half and I got one yesterday. I applied Ambreva on it five times yesterday and right now its not a big sore, but will garlic still work on it???

Thank you very much.

Mohammad 7 weeks ago

So I just cut a glove of garlic in half and placed it on my cold sore for 30 seconds, so i hope this works, I didnt really feel any burning sensation.

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 7 weeks ago

To get more juice from the garlic crush it first and then cut it in half. I hope it works for you.

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 7 weeks ago

Did you try the garlic yet? If you did then just keep doing it until all the sores go away.

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 7 weeks ago

Did it finally work for you?

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 7 weeks ago

Abreva blocks the virus, so I don't know. If you try it rinse well first. But its up to you. The garlic may have a chance to kill it, but you may want to wait until the next one.

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 7 weeks ago

I don't think it matters which kind of garlic you use

Vanessa 7 weeks ago

Hi, I did the garlic but I didn't have any honey... Will it still work??

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 7 weeks ago

Yes, it will still work. The honey helps sooth and heal quicker. The garlic is the virus killer and honey is the healer.

Mohammad 7 weeks ago

Hey, yea I did it another time yesterday and this time I smashed the garlic so the juices came out and when I applied it there was some burning. Right now I believe its hardening, should I apply garlic again or just put honey on it? Also if I have another outbreak later on should I put garlic on the area when I feel a tingling?

Thanks a lot!

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 7 weeks ago

Mohammad please do apply again and then put honey on it. If it feels really dead then just use honey. Let me know how it goes. And you are welcome I just hope it works.

Mohammad 7 weeks ago

Yea I put garlic on it and then honey afterwards. I'll prob repeat it again in a couple hours. Everytime I put garlic on it after crushing it the tingling pretty much stops which is good. I will keep you informed, I greatly appreciate the help. I just hope I can put this off from once every couples years to once every three or four as you said.

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 7 weeks ago

I would do the garlic again and if you are sure it is dead just use honey after that until its gone -- always be sure to rinse and then was your hands.

Mohammad 6 weeks ago

O ok, right now it has shrunk and has already become a crust so that's great. It prob would have healed a lot quicker if I had applied garlic from the first tingle rather than Abreva or if I had put garlic on it when the blister started forming! Thanks again for the help, much appreciated!

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 6 weeks ago

I found that in my case it doesn't work until it forms a blister -- perhaps because the garlic can't get through the skin. I am so glad it worked for you.

Sweetmeat 6 weeks ago

I will never use garlic again. On my fourth now this one is on my lower lip. I have never had an outbreak like this in my life.

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 6 weeks ago

I am so sorry it did not work for you and you have had so many problems with it. I guess abreva is the best bet for you. Thank you for your feed back. I am really amazed you had so many problems. I still think you are chasing the virus and it will soon be over. Good luck Sweetmeat. I hope you find an end to this outbreak soon.

Mohammad 6 weeks ago

O ok sure thing, thanks again! What do I do when its like a crust, do I just let it chill or do I apply anything else to it?

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 6 weeks ago

Mohammad if you don't have honey just leave it alone. You might want to apply garlic again if you feel it is not getting smaller. But it will heal in its own time if it is dead, honey helps keep it clean and speeds up the healing.

Lizzie 6 weeks ago

I have had a cold sore for a few days now and it looks more like a sore than blisters but i applied garlic anyway but i don't have any honey. It burned a lot but that's to be expected isn't it? i'm worried that it will spread :S is the aim to try and dry out the cold sore? so is it bad to moisturize it? do you think hydrocortizone (not sure how to spell it, its eczema cream) would help it as it removes a layer of skin? i really hope the garlic works :)

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 6 weeks ago

I am not a doctor, all I know is garlic in most cases works. I would not add anything else. I would wait -- if you have honey use that. Apply honey and rinse. Keep it dry. I don't think keeping it moist is a good idea, but that is only my opinion and experience. If it has a scab and is no longer it will heal on its own if you do nothing at all.

I'm on day 3 of an outbreak; blisters and crusting on side of lip. Tried the garlic method just now. Couldn't really differentiate tingling from burning so after a while I would just rinse, use a new garlic piece, rinse, etc. After 7 or 8 cloves of garlic, I rinsed and put honey. Washed it off now. We'll see how it goes. Will try again tomorrow and report back. (Will also continue using Abreva while at work since no access to garlic there).

Is it still contagious even if the crust comes off or even if its still in the crust stage?

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 5 weeks ago

I don't know Mohamammad. I would be carful and keep it and my hands clean. I would think if the crust comes off it is most likely not contagious. In the crust stage I wouldn't take any chances. I am not a doctor that is my opinion.

Hi guys just a tip for everyone that his having trouble with reacurring cold sores. I used to get them once a month and they were huge! I couldnt leave the house for atleast a week but you can go to your local chemist and buy some cold sore relief tablets over the counter and take these on a daily basis. Sinse I started taking them 2 years ago I have only had one cold sore and that is because I am having trouble with my immune system. Even just taking echinacea daily does the trick. I only wish I had of known it was that easy years ago!

Melissa 5 weeks ago

My cold sore started two days ago and became a blister the next day. I've been using Abreva since the first tingle but thought I would check out home remedies. I put the garlic one for about 30-60 seconds, rinsed, honey for 5 mins then rinsed. The garlic stung and burned like crazy. I think all I feel now is a burning sensation still and it looks like the size has already decreased...it's less swollen. The skin around the sore is pinkish still, probably because I have sensitive skin. The sore itself was mainly pussy looking prior to the garlic with the exception of two small blisters. The pussy/scabby parts look much better. The larger of the two blisters still looks like a blister. So I think I killed the big main pussy cluster but how can I be sure the other blisters have been killed? I never get much of a tingling sensation with cold sores. You said apply garlic 2 times in the day, should I keep applying until the other blister starts to get smaller? I don't want to damage my skin either.

Melissa 5 weeks ago

The skin is no longer pink but I think the two blisters are still tingling. I guess I will try another round of garlic and honey. It was quite a large cluster, about 1.5 cm. So far 1 cm looks zapped but not the other.

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 5 weeks ago

Thanks Melissa for sharing. Big blisters need more treament because the virus is deep and/or you may have missed a spot. I would do it again until the other feels dead. Keep me posted.

Ok so I have a cold sore in my nostril from being sick and blowing my nose so much. My question is, can I use this in my nostril or would that not be safe?

daughterson profile image

daughterson Hub Author 4 weeks ago

I had the same problem when I first used garlic -- the sore started inside my nostril and extend down -- it looked awful. The garlic didn't affect me in a ban way. I think it would be OK. It hurts more inside your nose. I can not say that it would be safe for you since I am not a doctor, but all medicine has its risk.

Lucy 2 days ago

Here is the thing some users might want to consider...when you have more outbreaks after use of garlic it is more than likely due to the fact that garlic will pull out that which hides in your body...another words those sites were sitting there with the virus in the tissue nerve just hiding out...so I would guess this garlic remedy is knocking it's ugly existence out of your body. As unpleasant as it may be initially, in the long run it should prove to be effective to get rid of those things long term. Remember this!...MRSA has NO defense against garlic, it can run but it can't hide, like the cold sore virus..it can run but it cannot hide from garlic. Keep on keeping, garlic is truly one of the worlds most amazing foods/medicines.
